Rick Quinlan, 59, lost a four year battle with kidney cancer on February 1. He passed away at his home in Brookeville. Rick owned and operated his own landscape service, Sunshine Lawns, and served much of Howard County for ten years. Rick followed the Howard County Iron Bridge Hounds for 20 years with his best friend and wife, Barbara Quinlan. He particularly loved hunting with Alan Forney and Roger Scullin, and frequently rode in Roger’s pocket, sharing in Roger’s deep knowledge of hounds and old hunting tales. In the off season, Rick could be found tailgating at hunter paces and the regional hunt races, and served as an outrider at the HCIBH spring race meet multiple times. Rick’s step-sons, Henry and Bryan Snively, and daughter-in-law, Blair Snively, carry on the family foxhunting tradition in his stead.
Rick was a lifelong Baltimore Orioles fan and recently worked as an usher at Camden Yards for two seasons. Rick loved the mountains, hiking, fishing, and kayaking with his wife. His favorite pastime was farm life, caring for his chickens, horses, dogs, and family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Quinlan; his stepsons, Bryan and Henry Snively, and Blair Snively; devoted son of his mom, Mary Jane Quinlan; dear brother to Donna Prescott, Judy Hladky, and Jimmy Quinlan; also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his dad, James F. Quinlan, of Landsdowne, MD.
He was a graduate of Landsdowne High School. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Drive, Suite 100, Rockville, MD 20850.
