On April 1, 2017, JUANITA S. DOWNS. Born Juanita Loreen Smith, April 12, 1921, in Abbottsburg, North Carolina, she was the first of the ten children of Charles P. Smith and Loreen B. Smith. She graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1938 and worked at S. H. Kress & Company in Faytetteville, NC.

On November 22, 1942, she married Sgt. Charles F. Downs, who was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, until he was sent overseas. After World War II, Mrs. Downs joined her husband in his assignments in Germany and Japan. In 1955, they returned to Ft. Meade, MD, and settled in nearby Glen Burnie. Sgt. Downs retired from the U.S. Army in 1966, after 30 years of service, and died in October, 1977.

While living in Glen Burnie, Mrs. Downs was active in the Garden Club, Homemakers, the Maryland Extension Service, and the Concert Association, as well as volunteering with the North Arundel Hospital Auxiliary. She was an enthusiastic artist, completing many works in pastel and watercolor. In 2005, Mrs. Downs moved to the Charlestown Community in Catonsville, MD.

She passed away on April 1, 2017, just short of her 96th birthday. A Memorial Service is being planned. She will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery (date to be determined).

Mrs. Downs is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Charles F. Downs II, of Glenelg, MD; two brothers: Mr. Haynes C. Smith of Knoxville, TN, and Mr. Hugh F. Smith of Williamson, NC; and three sisters: Mrs. Lucy J. Price of Reidville, NC, Mrs. Judy D. Liles of Chesapeake, VA,, and Ms. Flora A. Smith, also of Chesapeake, VA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Charlestown Benevolent Care Fund, Philanthropy Department, 715 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD 21228.
