Obituary: JoAnn Shay O’Neill, 65, died in her home in Columbia, MD on Tuesday, February 19th. Ms. O’Neill was born on April 1, 1947 in Baltimore, MD, and was a lifelong Maryland resident. She was also a lifelong dancer, never quite able to sit still and learning to express herself through movement in ballet and modern dance classes from a young age. She attended two years of the dance program at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY before transferring to the University of Maryland, College Park, where she graduated in 1970 with a BA in Dance. She received an MA in Performing Arts- Dance from American University in 1981 and a K-12 Teaching Certificate from Towson University in 1982. Ms. O’Neill spent her career as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and arts advocate. She was the Director of the Ballet School of Glyndon from 1968-1979, an Associate Professor of Dance at Towson University from 1979-1986, and a Company Member at Kinetics Dance Theatre from 1983-1995. She served on the Board of Directors at Kinetics until her death. Examples of Ms. O’Neill’s work can be found on her website, http://solomefilms.wix.com/dancejoann Diagnosed with cancer in 2011, JoAnn fought a long, brave battle before her death. Her boundless energy, positive attitude, and bright smile were an inspiration to all who encountered her. She will be dearly missed. JoAnn is survived by her true love and husband of 41 years, Robert J. O’Neill, of Columbia; her devoted daughter, Shayna O’Neill, of New York, NY; her sister, Kathy Shay, also of Columbia; her sister-in-law, Caroline O’Neill, of Stafford, VA; the Clubb/Bastin/Shay families of Henry County, KY; and a vast network of loving and supportive lifelong friends.
